Les Aventures Eoliennes

Narrow peninsula that extends into the Tyrrhenian Sea for seven kilometers. The intensely cultivated flat surface of this peninsula is situated 50-60 meters above sea level. To its extremity one finds “Capo Milazzo". The oldest history found of Milazzo is revealed by a Neolithic implantation dating back to 4000 BC.
The Sicules moved there between the IX and the VIII century BC, it is when the city acquires its prosperity and its wealth up until 649 BC, date in which the Greek city of “Mylai" is founded on the narrow slopes of the peninsula. During the Punic wars, it was in the waters of Milazzo that took place the naval battle between the Carthaginian and the Romans, which ended in 260 BC with the victory of the Roman fleet commanded by consul Caïus Duilius. At this time, Milazzo became an important naval base. In 843 it was the beginning of the Moslem domination under which the big tower of the dungeon was constructed. The tuna fishing was introduced during this time and developed itself during the centuries that followed while using more modern means. During the Norman era the city was fortified and in the XIII century Frédéric II of Swabia erected the powerful castle that the Spaniards of Ferdinand of Aragon provided an enclosure for in the XVI century. In 1860 Garibaldi inflicted Milazzo and the bourbon troops a hard defeat.
