The city, that is one of the last Greek colonies of Sicily, was founded in 396 BC. by Denys the Ancient. It is situated on a plain to the summit of the " Capo Tindari" promontory, site of an extraordinary seascape beauty. The Greek city " Tyndaris" obtains a prosperous life style and a monumental urban development, especially during the Roman era.
Faithful ally of Rome against Carthage at the time of the Punic wars, it enjoys particular privileges under the Empire.
During the 1st century AD. a considerable part of the city collapsed into the sea due to a crumbling. In the first centuries of Christian era and under the Byzantine, the city reached the rank of diocese until the Arabian conquest that ravaged it entirely.
On the most elevated part of ‘Capo Tindari’, probably the site of the ancient acropolis, stands the sanctuary of the " Virgin of Tindari" who shelters it venerated " Black virgin", statue made of Byzantine wood that the tradition indicates as coming from the oriental countries.

the Basilica or gymnasium from the Late Empire where the public assemblies were held, are among the many things we can see on the site of ‘Capo Tindari’.
